A man accused of stealing a big rig says he was being chased by zombies when he lost control and crashed, injuring seven people.

Jerimiah Hartline told police in California that dead people were clinging onto the truck, local news website Temecula Patch reported.

The 19-year-old claimed he had swerved across the road in an attempt to shake off the zombies.

Nathan Baer, a California Highway Patrol officer, said Hartline took the truck, which was full of strawberries, when its driver stopped at a weigh bridge.

After colliding with several cars, he flipped the big rig onto its side, blocking the carriageway for seven hours.

“He was arrested at the crash scene and appeared to be in an altered state, claiming he was being chased by zombies,” Officer Baer said.

A 19-year-old woman who was a passenger in one of the cars suffered a serious head injury and a severed artery. She remains in hospital, Temecula Patch reported.

Hartline, of Tennessee, pleaded not guilty to six offenses, including assault with a deadly weapon, the truck.

He also denies reckless driving, vehicle theft, attempted vehicle theft, driving without a license and involvement in a hit-and-run resulting in injury.

He is due to appear in court again on April 17.

Jared Gurman allegedly shot his girlfriend, Jessica Gelderman, with a .22-caliber rifle on Monday after an argument over the AMC television show ‘The Walking Dead’ (video below).

Gurman was angry at Gelderman because she would not take the possibility of a real zombie attack seriously, reports WPIX-TV.

Nassau County Police Detective Lt. Raymond Cote told a press conference: “He feels strongly about the possibility that some military mishap could occur causing some tragic consequence. She felt that it was ridiculous.”

Gelderman drove Gurman back to his home and then returned to her home in Long Island, New York.

Their zombie argument continued on text messages, so Gelderman drove back to Gurman’s home because he had become unstable.

Lt. Cote said: “She tried to diffuse the situation and calm him down. She was walking up the stairs to the apartment when Mr. Gurman raised the rifle, pointed it at her and fired one round into her back.”

Gelderman was in stable condition at a hospital on Tuesday, but the bullet remained in her body. Gurman reportedly confessed to police to the intentional shooting after first telling them that it was an accident.

Gurman was charged with attempted murder and at least three guns were seized from his home.
