Welcome to Medical Monday!
Today’s Topic is: Pneumonia!
Pneumonia can suck. You can’t do anything without being short of breath (abbreviated SOB…), hacking up funky colored phlegm, and felling overall fairly shitty. You have a fever, and with a fever comes all over aches, feeling cold (you only feel hot when the fever “breaks”), and you don’t want to do anything except cry to your mommy for her to bring you soup. In the Zombie Apocalypse, you cannot afford to be sick with pneumonia. I’m going to tell you how to prevent it, and how to treat it if you get it!
Step one in prevention: QUIT SMOKING!!!! That icky tobacco and chemical laden smoke destroys your lungs and makes them prone to bacteria. Bad News. And the “cherry” on a cigg can be seen for up to a mile or something like that so just resolve to stop smoking.
Step Two: a mask. And not the shitty masks that are in stores. You need the “round mask” as I call them. Make sure it fits tight over your nose. You should not be able to smell too much. You should wear this whenever you are entering houses you think have mold, dead bodies, or otherwise icky skanky places. And if you are going into an area with rotting bodies, put some Vick’s on the OUTSIDE of your mask and you wont smell the horrible smell. Trust me, we had to cut off literally this lady’s ROTTING leg, and that trick saved me in the OR. Didn’t smell it at all!

Step Three: Get enough sleep! It is amazing how healthy we can stay if we just get enough sleep! Power in numbers and a good sleep cycle should be in hour and a half blocks. Waking up in the middle of a sleep cycle makes you super groggy all day so plan accordingly!
When you get pneumonia…
First step: recognize it early. You will start to notice you need to breathe harder and faster. Normally, you shouldn’t be aware of your breathing, when you start to notice, this can be a sign that you need to lay low for a few days and let your body heal itself.
You may begin coughing more. You may start coughing up icky phlegm. This is a later warning sign. This is when you find a good hide out, stock up on Gatorade and Vitamin C, and lay low until you feel better.
If you begin to cough a lot and develop a fever, you have waited too long and now you may be screwed.
If you are unable to rest when you feel the symptoms coming on and you get full blown pneumonia, then you may become zombie bait if you are alone. It takes a HEALTHY person about 3 weeks to fully recover. If you are malnourished and stressed, it will take you much longer, sometimes up to 3 months!. This is why it is important to recognize the earlier signs and attack the problem while it is still small.
Antibiotics that are usually effective in NORMAL pneumonia (not complicated by Asthma, COPD, or other lung diseases) is a treatment of Azithromycin 500mg on the first day then 250mg for 4 days or Clarithromycin 1,000mg for 5 days. This is taking into account that you are not exposed to fungi or other weird bugs.
So that’s it in a nutshell!
Moral of the Story: Recognize Pneumonia early and REST or RISK becoming Zombie bait
