Today’s Topic is: Valuable Drugs

You may be asking yourself, what are going to be the most valuable drugs during the apocalypse? I’m talking about drugs you find in the Pharmacy so drugs like Heroin, cocaine, and the like, are not included here.

ANTIBIOTICS

Antibiotics will be good in the apocalypse, but which ones are the most valuable?

Honestly, I believe there will be a lot of skin infections from hygiene issues and subsequent cuts and scrapes. This will mean that the following antibiotics will be the most valuable: Keflex (aka Cephalexin), Clindamycin, Augmentin (aka Amoxicillin-clavulanate), ciprofloxacin, and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (aka: Bactrim). And remember, a lot of infections can be prevented by thoroughly washing out wounds and keeping them clean. If you do that, you don’t need to take any antibiotics.

If you are living in the woods, you might encounter Lyme’s disease and other tick borne diseases. For that you need Doxycycline. If you get Giardia (aka Bever Fever) which is a massive, putrid diarrhea, you need metronidazole (aka Flagyl).

UPPERS

Uppers will help you stay awake or help keep alert during night-time watches. Be careful with these as you can give yourself a heart attack if you take too many, get addicted, or otherwise tweak out. Like everything in life, use moderation.

The obvious drugs are Adderall and Ritalin. Because everyone knows them, they will be the first to go. So the ones left will be Methylin and Daytrana (both aka methylphenidate), Dexedrine (aka dextroamphetamine), and Provigil (aka modafinil). Again, be careful with these drugs.

DOWNERS

These are the drugs you use to fall asleep after you have taken too many uppers. Also, adrenaline is going to be high, and can also impair your sleeping. Again, these drugs are dangerous. You run the risk of not waking up until the Zombies are nom-noming on your shoe. I’m going to only talk about the safe ones. The drugs that I’m going to suggest, are the ones used for insomnia. So basically, you need to make sure you are getting 8 hours of sleep or else you have a really bad hangover and functioning is really hard. Guaranteeing 8 hours of sleep in a zombie apocalypse is damn near impossible. So in reality, I would not recommend taking these drugs unless you are staying somewhere safe that you can sleep in.

Ambien and Lunesta will be the first to go. Drugs that are similar include Edluar (aka zolpidem), rozerem (aka ramelteon), and sonata (aka zaleplon). You can always try diphenhydramine (aka Benadryl) as a sleep aid and that leaves much less of a hangover.

PAIN KILLERS

Now, everyone talks about how they would rather be in pain than unable to react to a zombie because they are high. Those people have never been in real pain. When I had my knee surgery, I was on Oxycontin and vicodin and I was NEVER high. When you are in pain, the drugs won’t make you high. They will dull the pain so you can move and be active. So sometimes you really need the drugs. Use them if you need them.

Vicodin, Lortab, Norco, Oxycontin, Percocet, Tylenol #3, and Demerol are on everyone’s list. Pharmacies may be wiped out by the time you get there. They would be worth getting if you find them, as they would be good for trading. Dilaudid, fentanyl, and morphine would NOT be good choices, as they are too strong to maintain your thinking skills. You would be too high to react properly to a zombie attack.

Some non-narcotics that are good pain killers are the over the counter pills. Tylenol’s (acetaminophen) max dose per day is 4 grams, ibuprofen (Advil, motrin) max is 3.2 grams, and aleve (naproxen) max is 1.5 grams. Keep this in mind when you are taking these for pain. The pills are usually in milligrams (mg) so 1000mg = 1 gram (for the mathematically challenged).

All of these drugs will make very good trade items so if you can find them, make room in your BOB for them.

Moral of the Story: You don’t need the whole pharmacy!!!
