This lesson works well if you’re just camping for the weekend or living off the land during a Zompoc. The last thing you want is to attract unwanted attention. You may think I am talking about camouflage or some other means of hiding yourself but this time I am trying to keep you from being visited by wild animals like me and my buddy. Although you may not worry if I come for a visit you might get upset if a bear or some other less behaved animals come by uninvited.
Today I am talking about the Bear hang. I’ll stop you right there I am not talking about hanging bears I already covered traps and trapping. No the Bear hang is a method of securing food and other good smelling stuff so that my animal buddy’s don’t try to crash your party.
Here’s what you’ll need, first you’ll need a good long rope the longer the better, and a bag of some kind to keep everything that will attract wild life. Such things include food of all kinds animals love free food, Toiletries you may not think so but things like toothpaste soap shampoo all smell really good to some of my wild friends. Garbage if you’re camping as opposed to running from zeds you’ll be packing out what you pack in and garbage especially stuff that had food in it will attract attention.
Ok so tie one end of the rope to the pack you’ll uses to hang all this in you may use more than one bag if you have to but keep in mind you will be hauling this up and you’ll want to get it good and High and yet fare enough from branch and trunk that no animals can easily climb to it. Then toss the other end of the rope over a branch hopefully it’s good and strong. Using all your strength may as well get your friends in on this fun the higher you can get your bag the better. Once the bag is up to a height you like I recommend if possible 14 -20 feet but higher is better keep in mind an adult bear can stand on its hind legs up to about 7 feet and could likely reach about 8 feet . Once you have your bag as high as it goes tie it off. Please don’t tell me I have to tell you to make sure you tie the knots good and tight. So I’ll skip the knot tying part.
Until next time Yeti.
