The daily grind it’s been around forever since man first started tracking days. Even a Hunting and Gathering society has a routine that can get tedious let’s face it unless you’re in the middle of a fire fight even being a soldier has its routines. Get up grab your gear, put in your duty, eat your Mess , go back on duty, eat lunch, go out on patrol day in day out. I am sure there are times of excitement but for the most part every job eventually gets to the point you can practically run on automatic. What’s worse is after a while each week is just like the last and July starts to look like June. If you can identify with this you’re probably also thinking “Man, a Zompoc would be a nice change of pace”.
You’re probably thinking every day will be a new adventure. That may be true in the beginning but the truth is even that will take on a routine. Yes the first couple of weeks will be run for your life panic, a constant state of fight or flight. After a while though you’ll find a safe place to set up, shop and hunker down you may even find that you have weeks without seeing another person outside of your own group or a zombie .
When that happens you’ll start falling into a routine. Maybe you’ll grow crops or keep animals or be a hunter and trapper. Whatever you do with your life you’ll have certain things you do that you will perform every day, week or month. Go out and plant the fields, walk your patrol, stop for lunch, do another patrol, eat supper, another patrol, water crops, set the watch, sleep cause tomorrow you do it all again.
Try doing that every day and not considering giving up and just “eating your shotgun†. The thing that keeps us from going nuts now is that we every so often get a special event that breaks the routine. We get long weekends and holidays. We may even try to celebrate some of the big ones like Christmas or the 4th of July but how long will we keep up such things?
Realistically when society collapses will anyone really care to long for what day The U.S. got independence when you are chased by zombies? What chance do you think you’ll even remember your birthday, some of us barely remember now.
Survival isn’t just about what we do physically to get by that’s not survival that’s just living. If all you’re doing is staying alive you may as well get bit and join the hoarde. You need something that will give you a reason to continue on more than just putting one foot in front of the other. Even a Zombie has that much.
Now if you’ll excuse me it’s National Yeti Day.
Until next time Yeti .
