In the aftermath of the Zombie Apocalypse, it is more than likely that individual groups of survivors will begin an attempt to rebuild some form of society. History has proven that it’s an inevitable result of two societies refusing to cooperate with each other, and at some point, it is highly likely that you and your group will have to either fight or flee from an opponent that is superior to you in terms of military strength. The good news is that if you choose to fight a superior enemy, it is still possible to win, and this brings us today’s topic: Guerrilla Tactics.

Guerrilla fighters all over the world have successfully fended off superior enemies by the use of the terrain around them, anything and everything that they can steal or re-purpose to make weapons, and hitting fast and hard before the enemy can react. The Taliban and Al-Qaeda are two groups who have used these tactics to great success in recent history. These tactics have also been used in Vietnam, Columbia, Somalia, Panama, China, Japan, and in every African nation that can say it’s ever had a warlord. Many of these groups have fought against the strongest professional military forces in the world, and successfully defended their territory. For all the Americans who think I’m only talking about terrorist tactics, we used them in the Revolutionary War, and it worked out pretty damn well for us.

Guerrilla warfare is all about making the enemy use more resources than they believe the war is worth, and destroying the morale of enemy troops at the same time. You must use stealth and pick high profile targets so that you can cause the maximum amount of damage with what little you have. A favorite target of guerrilla fighters is munitions depots. Successfully raiding one of these not only gives you more firepower to use against the enemy, but it also deprives them of it’s use, and makes the low level soldiers doubt the leadership who controlled the forces at the depot. Another high profile target would be something that the enemy holds dear, such as a high level leader, or a highly decorated officer. Food stores are also excellent targets because no army can march very far on an empty stomach. Fuel stores are a nice double wammy, not only can you deprive them of electricity, and motorized transportation, but you can also use it to make a nice IED to use as a distraction for a flanking attack to hit another high profile target.

Once you and your team have decided on the priority of enemy targets, you will need to use stealth to get close enough to them to launch your attack. This may require using cover to get close to a settlement, or hiding in plain site to get into a populated area. You will have to adapt your technique to the situation, as every situation is different. Just keep in mind to have an escape route planned, and near by so you can make a hasty retreat.

Guerrilla attacks are often launched at a specific time, or after a signal is given. Often times a signal would be an explosion, or a designated fire team acting as a short distraction for a second team to fire from the rear of the enemy. At the start of the attack, you want the enemy to be confused, this creates hesitation, and that is what gets soldiers killed. Having multiple fire teams surrounding the enemy in an ambush situation is very effective in achieving this goal, each team acts as a distraction for each other team, so that the enemy forces are constantly turning around looking for the gun behind them.

Hesitation doesn’t last long though, once the enemy gets their bearings and starts fighting back, that’s your signal to bug out. You want to do this early as possible because it reduces your losses, and keeps the enemy’s loss ratio high. Nothing demoralizes a soldier quite like seeing 4 or 5 of his fellows dead, and only 1 or 2 of the attackers to show for it. If you continue attacks like this on a regular basis, the enemy’s soldiers will eventually refuse to perform their duties because of the perceived high chance that they’ll be the next one killed if they go on another mission.

Assassination can be described as the most graceful of guerrilla tactics. The death of one has often saved the lives of many, and if you can have a person who is skilled in the delivery of many forms of death, they can easily show the power of this tactic. While snipers are the most blatant form assassination, their presence becomes known quickly. It is often more effective to spread fear and confusion amongst the enemy leadership by killing off members silently, thus allowing them to implode through fear and suspicion. Some methods of this would be to slit their throat in their sleep, or to poison food that is likely to be eaten by the target. Methods like this spread fear like wildfire in fortified areas because no one has any idea who to suspect of making the kill.
